FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
Does it hurt?
What does a treatment involve?
How many needles do you use?
Are there any risks?
Is it safe?
Are there any side effects?
There is a sensation when a needle is inserted into an acupuncture point, this is known as 'Deqi'. This is
often described as deep, tingling, heavy, aching but should not be painful.
What does a treatment involve?
The initial consultation lasts approximately 1 ½ hours and involves a detailed discussion about your current symptoms, medical history, diet, digestion, sleep patterns and emotional state. I will take your pulses, there are 3 different positions on each wrist and many different qualities felt on the pulse which give invaluable information for planning your treatment. I will look at your tongue, and then carry out an individually designed acupuncture treatment specific to your needs.
Subsequent treatments last between 45 minutes and an hour and involve taking your pulses, looking at your tongue, assessing progress and carrying out your treatment.
This varies enormously and depends on what we are treating. I tend to use more needles for musculo
skeletal than other problems. On average I use between 10-14 needles.
There are no signficant risks to acupuncture. Some points may bleed at times, and occasionally you may be left with a small bruise, although this is rare.
Yes, in the hands of a qualified practitioner.
You may feel tired after treatment, particularly the first treatment and if you have not had acupuncture before.
